Kurume city, which located in south west of Fukuoka prefecture, is the third biggest city in Fukuoka. The transportation system in this city is quite convenient, and close to Fukuoka main city. It is a popular spots for tourists, such as abundant nature, and historic site.
There are a Japanese gardens, that was built not only in the private residence, but also to shrines and temples.

Rakusui pond Japanese garden is the quaint strolling pond garden in Kurume city art museum, which is close to Kurume station. This garden had been owned by Shojiro Ishibashi, and was donated to Kurume city.
There are a strong waterfall and skillful stoneworks, with seasonal flower tree in the vast pond Japanese garden. In particular, the view from cafe “Rakusui-tei” adjoing the garden is wonderful and take your breath away. In addition to the Japanese garden, there are Western garden such as a rose garden and forests, those gardens is worth a visit, if you have a plan to go to Kurume city

It is stunning Japanese garden in Hensyoin temple that located in the center of Kurume city. There are two types of gardens, dry garden from the entrance and to the back the strolling pond garden. The natural stones and sand are arranged in various directions in circular simple dry garden. On the other hand, the strolling pond garden represents the steep mountain on islands by arranging sharp rocks around pebble stones in the river. It give us an artist’s  impression about create garden ideas.

Gokoku Shrine Japanese garden

This garden is in Gokoku Shrine worshiped as a god of agriculture, and it is the walking distance from main Kurume station. There are the spring and summer-blooming trees, such as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, azaleas, and irises, in the garden. The stone bridges, leading to shrine, have the Chinese style of handrail and a gentle curve. The Park that is next to this garden, is also famous as a tourist destination, because of  a big park with a large fountain called “Sekisyotei”.

Uenoke garden

It is located in east side of Kurume city which is a little far. Although a bus and 20 minutes walking are the transportation to get there, It’s worth visiting here.
Uenoke garden was strolling pond garden used by the feudal lord as a resting place and open to the public now.

A flat stone bridges, crossing the pond, is a technic that arrange a large single block of stone as a bridge superstructure and set rocks on both sides to hold it in place, developed in Azuchi-Momoyama period (Late 16th). There are many camellias which bloom in February and sheared azaleas which bloom in May around the pond.
